Stanley Greene était un célèbre photographe américain. Souvent décrit comme un « poète », il était un visionnaire et un artiste qui découvrait de grandes vérités sous-jacentes dans les moments les plus sombres de son époque. Il a couvert les conflits en Azerbaïdjan, en Bosnie-Herzégovine, en Géorgie, en Irak, en Somalie, en Croatie, au Cachemire et au Liban. Il a documenté le génocide au Rwanda en 1994 et les effects de l'ouragan Katrina aux États-Unis.

Stanley Greene was a well-known American photographer and photojournalist. Having been repeatedly described as a “poet”, he was a visionary and a heartfelt artist who found great underlying truths which concern all of us in some of the darkest moments of the times he lived in. He covered the conflicts in Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Somalia, Croatia, Kashmir and Lebanon. He documented the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and the aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina in the US.

Il est né en 1949 à New York et il commence sa carrière artistique en tant que peintre. C’est le photographe W. Eugene Smith qui l'a encouragé à se tourner vers la photographie. Après avoir étudié la discipline à New York et à San Francisco, il s'est installé à Paris, où il commence à travailler comme photographe de mode. C'est en 1989 qu'il a commencé à se concentrer sur le photojournalisme, après qu'une de ses photos, montrant une fille avec une jupe en tutu et une bouteille de champagne, soit devenue un symbole de la chute du mur de Berlin.

He was born in 1949 in New York and began his art career as a painter, but he was encouraged to pursue photography by the photographer W. Eugene Smith. After studying the discipline in New York and San Francisco, he moved to Paris, where he started working in fashion photography. It was in 1989 when he really started focusing on photojournalism, after his picture of a girl wearing a tutu skirt with a bottle of champagne became a symbol of the fall of the Berlin wall.

Sa couverture de la guerre en Tchétchénie est particulièrement célèbre, un conflit presque inconnu en occident. Même lorsque les éditeurs de photographie des publications où il travaillait remettaient en question son choix de sujet, il montrait sa passion en tant que photographe engagé, y retournant pour documenter tous les aspects de la guerre. Son livre publié sur ce conflit, "Open Wound", témoigne de sa poursuite infatigable de la vérité et de sa détermination à ne rien laisser sans dire.
Il a cofondé l'agence de photographie NOOR en 2007, et en plus de son travail habituel pour des magazines tels que le New York Times, TIME magazine ou The New Yorker, plusieurs livres ont été publiés par et sur lui. Particularly well-known is his coverage of the war in Chechnya, a conflict almost unheard of in the Western world. Even when photography editors for the agencies and publications that he worked with would question the relevance of his choice, he showed his resolution as a steadfast photographer, traveling extensively to document as much as he could. His published book on the war, Open Wound, displays his never-ending search for truth, his determination to not contain himself, to leave nothing unsaid.
He co-founded the photography agency NOOR in 2007, and aside from his usual work for magazines like the New York Times, TIME or The New Yorker, several books were published by and about him. He died in 2017, leaving the extensive legacy of his photographs, but also of his devotion to truth and his personal artistic philosophy, which inspires both photographers and audiences nowadays.
