Jouant sur sa maîtrise des décors de cinéma, il crée son propre univers pictural lumineux et coloré.English
Within the Encounters section of this year’s London Art Fair, Galerie de Buci is proud to present a solo show of Dean Tavoularis, a meeting of cinema and painting, an unlikely yet deeply resonant juxtaposition: a master of Hollywood set design turns away from the camera and toward the canvas. Renowned for having worked with such great directors as Michelangelo Antonioni, Roman Polanski, William Friedkin, Warren Beatty, Arthur Penn, Philip Kaufman, Wim Wenders and above all Francis Ford Coppola, Dean Tavoularis is now unveiling his paintings. Playing on his mastery of film sets, he creates his own luminous, colorful pictorial universe.

Âgé de 93 ans, il a notamment été récompensé par un Oscar des meilleurs décors en 1975 pour Le Parrain II et par un BAFTA Awards en 1989 pour Tucker : L'homme et son rêve, sans compter d’innombrables autres nominations et prix. Installé à Paris, il n'a jamais cessé de créer et se consacre aujourd'hui à la peinture, au collage et à la sculpture.La rencontre ici est double. D'abord, une figure célèbre du cinéma se révèle en tant qu'artiste. Ensuite, ses œuvres explorent la manière dont la peinture et le collage peuvent remettre en question et réinventer les illusions du cinéma. Tavoularis brouille la frontière entre les arts appliqués et les beaux-arts, entre les images construites pour raconter une histoire et celles qui existent en elles-mêmes. Ses compositions audacieuses, colorées et souvent architecturales nous invitent à repenser la narration en dehors du cinéma et la manière dont la peinture elle-même peut être transformée lorsqu'elle est imprégnée de la vision d'un maître du cinéma.

At the age of 93, his awards include an Oscar for Best Set Design in 1975 for The Godfather II and a BAFTA Award in 1989 for Tucker: The Man and His Dream, not to mention countless other nominations and prizes. Based in Paris, he has never stopped creating, and today devotes himself to painting, collage and sculpture.The encounter here is twofold. First, a celebrated figure from cinema reveals himself as a visual artist. Second, his artworks explore how painting and collage can question and reinvent the illusions of film. Tavoularis blurs the line between applied and fine art, between images built for narrative and those that exist on their own terms. His bold, colourful, often architectural compositions invite us to rethink what storytelling looks like outside of cinema, and how painting itself can be transformed when infused with the vision of a master of film.

Dean Tavoularis a marqué l'histoire du cinéma par ses décors audacieux, ses univers innovants et son esthétique irréprochable, qu'il transpose aujourd'hui dans ses œuvres d'art. Dans ses peintures, dessins et sculptures, Dean Tavoularis révèle certaines de ses pensées et émotions les plus intimes, jouant avec la lumière et l'obscurité, l'ordre et le chaos. Ses compositions dynamiques vibrent de vie, débordantes d'énergie et de mouvement, reflétant les complexités de l'existence. Dean Tavoularis has left his mark on the history of cinema with his bold sets, innovative universes and impeccable aesthetics, which he now transposes into his works of art. In his paintings, drawings and sculptures, Dean Tavoularis reveals some of his innermost thoughts and emotions, playing with light and darkness, order and chaos. His dynamic compositions pulsate with life, teeming with energy and movement, reflecting the complexities of existence. His works invite us to an eternal dance between reality and illusion, blurring the lines between the tangible and the imaginary. He explains it himself: "A wonderful thing happens in painting: I surrender myself into someone else's hands. I'm drawn to a childish sense of color that is in no way civilized. I'm drawn to the colors of contemporary machines and so much more”.
